My love of draughting started when I was 11. I have an older brother that took Technical Drawing as a subject, and he would sit for hours at the dining room table ensuring that every measurement was precise. I watched him pour his heart into new designs and I knew then that I wanted to be a draughtsman. While attending the Academy of Advanced Technology, I was able to learn three main areas of draughting: Architectural, civil, structural and mechanical. It was in my first position outside of college where I focused mainly on Structural draughting and where I found my enthusiasm for Structural and Architectural draughting. My passion comes from being able to create something new or improving on what already exists. I found completing a difficult project while meeting deadlines can be challenging however finding a way to solve a problem or overcome a challenge during this process to see a project to the end is extremely rewarding. Difficult projects challenge me into doing further research thereby gaining knowledge and expanding my work experience. Having worked in both a Structural Engineers office as well as with an Architectural Technologist has been beneficial for my career as it has allowed me the opportunity to understand how the two specialties work together as well as what designs would work and would not. Being a woman in a male dominant industry comes with challenges but I believe this together with my work experience gives me an edge and sets me apart from other draughtsmen as women provide a better understanding of functionality within a structure.
